FAQs

  • What exactly is the Sensory Roll Program?

Sensory Roll is a sensory-friendly class that combines the core elements of BJJ with additional physical, social, communication, and sensory supports.

  • Who is this class designed for?

This class is for warriors who have been or are unable to successfully enter our traditional programs. This could, for example, be due to sensory needs, delayed receptive language, or the need for more focused smaller class sizes. This class is in no way a replacement for 1:1 therapy- it is a small group class offering a variety of supports for participation success in BJJ.

  • What are the details?

Prior to acceptance into the program, caregivers will speak directly with the head coach to discuss the prospective Warrior’s individual needs. Each Warrior is also required to attend a private assessment lesson ($45) to determine whether the program is an appropriate fit.

Classes are held every Wednesday from 4:30–5:15 PM. Monthly membership is $100. Sessions take place in our smaller mat room to ensure a focused, supportive, and personalized learning environment. To maintain high-quality instruction, classes are limited to a maximum of six participants at the coach’s discretion, with a typical student-to-coach ratio of approximately 2:1.

  • Are there prerequisites for the class?

We ask that our sensory warriors:

    • Are at least 4 years old.
    • Can interact with coaches and peers safely.
    • Will remain on the mat for 45 minutes without eloping (calming area provided, if a break is needed).
    • Do not need total 1:1 assistance, but can work in a small group.
    • Follow simple step directions.

  • What are the key features?

Core BJJ Training: BJJ movements and techniques of strength, balance, and coordination. Major positions will be covered.

Smaller Class Size: More individualized attention to facilitate participation and success.

Sensory-friendly environment: Greater focus on structure and use of sensory approaches. This will include sensory tools such as fidgets, reinforcers, and visual aids as well as a calming area, if needed.

Social Skill Development: Activities to increase communication skills, social engagement, and understanding of positive values.

Adaptive Curriculum: Dynamic pacing to best promote individual progress.

  • Is this membership intended to be temporary or part of a transition?

Sensory Roll is designed with room for growth. Warriors follow a structured curriculum that gradually increases in expectations throughout each month, with core positions and movements revisited every few months to support mastery and confidence.

Some Warriors will be best suited to remain in this program long-term, progressing at their own pace. Others may work toward transitioning into one of our traditional kids’ programs when appropriate and if desired.
